"video games are [[bad]] for you!"
"you won't get enough [[exercise]] if you stay inside playing video games!"
"they're too [[violent]]!"
"they're [[expensive]] and [[addictive]]"
"[[my kid won't spend any time with me!]]"
You don't get exercise from enjoying [[books and movies]], either.
While there are some video games designed for exercise, many are actually intended to tell a [[story]]...
Way to judge an entire form of media by something that only happens in a few genres.
I bet you don't complain about [[books and movies]] being too violent, do you?
As with any form of art, the [[artist]] needs to make a living, you know.
Of course they are! Who wouldn't want to go on an adventure, and become something you'd never be able to in real life?
After all, immersion is a very important part of a good [[story]].
That's not because of video games.
Children are in no way obligated to love or spend time with their parents, and if they want to do something else and not spend any time with you, then you're probably doing something wrong.
A lot of people seem to forget that kids are human beings and not property, and maybe, as kids, we want to immerse ourselves in a different world, a different [[story]], to forget that we're treated as such...
Yes, art can be pixels on a screen, and lines of code can tell a [[story]], and expecting games to be free is like walking up to someone who paints pictures for a living and asking them to take time out of their life to paint a picture for you and expecting not to have to pay a cent.
If you're one of those people, the actual [[bad]] thing is what you're doing.
what if you got to go on your very own adventure?
imagine your favourite superhero comic book, but you're the one beating up the bad guys. Or your favourite fantasy novel, but you got to choose what path the protagonist takes. Or, if you wanted to relax and live in a town full of anthropomorphic animals, [[there are games where you could do that too, if you wanted.]]
Sometimes, narrative could stand to be a bit more [[interactive]].
Video games should not be seen as any more of a distraction than other forms of *narrative*, like books and movies!
They're an effective way to tell a [[story]], and perhaps that should be explored more, rather than dismissed...
If you're interested in that, you should check out the "Animal Crossing" series.
